The article I chose focuses on the environmental issue that is happening in Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the country's with very exotic flora and fauna. What is happening right now is that companies are illegally cutting down trees in supposedly protected forests. This creates many problems, first of all the animals who live there are forced to leave their habitat, making them more endangered than they already are. It also shows that the country doesn't protect their reserves .
This relates with what we have seen in class because the lack of interest on behalf of the government affects the people that live there . The deforestation causes landslides and other natural disasters so it affects the people negatively. Also it shows how countries that are not so developed are targeted by larger companies. Many times the government is corrupt in this way since they get paid by the companies to turn their heads away to the illegal deforestation
Nicole,
ReplyDeleteYou bring up a good point about large companies having a sometimes negative impact on communities. How might someone defend these companies? How would a politician from Indonesia explain his/her decision to allow this to happen?
